Dark chocolate has the lowest amount of fat, and also has quite high levels of compounds called ‘antioxidants’, which are very good for you ๐Ÿ™‚ So in small quantities, there are great health benefits from eating dark chocolate!

I just did a very quick (non-scientific!) survey of 3 random choc bars @ Tesco; a milk choc bar had 32.6g fat & 47.9 sugar (it was 34% cocoa). A dark choc bar had 53.5g fat and 13.8g sugar โ€“ much less. It was 85% cocoa. A white choc bar (not really choc at all in my opinion); had 34.8g fat and 53.8g sugar.

Interestingly, what is sometimes called chocolate in the UK would be called โ€˜vegolateโ€™ in Europe bc some donโ€™t have enough cocoa solids (< 35%) to be called chocolate! Not a very appetising name!

Chocolate (not white generally) contains varying amounts of cocoa โ€“ and these contain flavonoids (a class of polyphenols). Tea, coffee and red wine also contain polyphenols. A Study done in Norway in 2,031 older people found that intake of flavonoid-rich tea, wine & chocolate was associated with better cognitive performance โ€“ Iโ€™ll have some dark chocolate with my red wine then!

I would have thought the milk in milk chocolate would lead to a higher fat content . But that would seem to contradict Alex’s empirical data. That’s why we make observations and do experiments, because what might appear to be common sense isn’t always true.

But I think we’d need a lot more evidence before making a final conclusion. ๐Ÿ™‚

I always thought it was the amount of cocoa butter in it that contributed to the fat levels. Dark chocolate certainly has lower sugar levels ๐Ÿ™‚ yum yum! i am hungry now!
