Hi Briton; a couple of things really; I had worked as a pension lawyer in South Africa for about five years, and studied there too (tax law) before returning to the UK in 1999. In 2000 I had my daughter.

I couldn’t go directly into pensions law in the UK without re-training and to be honest, I didn’t relish the thought of doing the same thing anyway! After a few years being a mum, I really wanted to do something – I was bored stupid just being at home!

While I had been a stay-at-home mum, I had become very interested in heath & diet and started running/playing squash, getting fit generally. I had started reading websites and books for sports people and the dietary aspect of it all fascinated me. I remember reading that fat contained 9 kcals per gram and protein 4 kcals per gram, and wondering how they knew that!

I decided that I’d train to be a dietician as I was also really fascinated in diseases, especially those of the gastrointestinal tract… Anyway (phew!), I couldn’t do dietetics (as none of the local universities did it), so settled on Human Nutrition instead!
