I don’t like animal testing for things like beauty products or soaps. I also don’t like experiments on monkey’s. I think sometimes though it is necessary to test out our ideas on mice and rats so that we can understand them better 🙂
As I mentioned in the chat, I think animal testing is a neccesary evil. I’d prefer we didn’t have to do it, but there are some things we can’t test on humans, so we need to use animal. It does need to be strictly regulated and controlled before to avoid unneccesary causing the animals unncessary harm or suffering. A lot of my colleagues use mice in their experiments, but they need to go through a strict training course, and all of the experiments they do need to be ethically approved.
I think that like Andy says it is a neccessary evil. I think that one day we will be able to test new drugs using computer models, but until we know how everything works in the cell we will need to use animals.
However when you use animals you have to follow the three prinicipals of Reduction, Replacement and Refinement. These ensure that you dont use too many animals, you dont use an animal when you could use cells or computers, and that you make sure the animal doesnt suffer. Following these rules is a legal requirement if you want to do animal research.
I think medical testing on animals is something that we need to do – I don’t like it, but as has been said before, its a necessary evil. I don’t agree with testing cosmetics on animals though – companies like the body shop make great products without animal testing, so there’s clearly no need for companies to use animals for this at all.
The thing to remember with medical testing on animals is how tightly regulated it is – there are a lot of laws about how you’re allowed to use animals, and they have to be really well looked after. Testing of medicines on animals can only be done when we’re really sure that the medicine works anyway – it will have been tested on cells for a long time first – and its only to make sure that there aren’t any unexpected side effects. It’s sort of ‘the lesser of two evils’, rather than giving it to people and finding out about any nasty side-effects then. Other experiments using animals are to find out how illnesses happen – it’s not very nice, but its important that we find these things out from a few animals tohelp a lot of people. I can see why some people are against it though, and I’m glad I don’t have to do any animal testing for my research.
This is a good point. rats and mice are animals too. I should point out that i don’t have anything really to do with animals. I hate the thought of it too, but if you had a drug that you thought could save someones life wouldn’t you want to know it was safe first?
Any experiment that tests on any animals is subject to strict regulations. We may not like it, but sometimes it’s the only way to test out a drug before trying it on humans.
Animal testing is cruel for things like cosmetics but in terms of science we make 100% sure the the animals don’t suffer. I personally prefer animals to most humans anyway!! 🙂
Science puts you in a difficult position it think. I have avoided having to do tests on live animals so far and i hope it continues!! but if i had to and it was the best way to do it…if i could save someones life then i would have to say i would probably do it.
I agree Kaitlyn, alot of the stuff that happens can seem cruel. At my uni we have a vet who works along side scientists to make sure the animals dont suffer. By doing these sort of test we learn so much that will eventually mean that we dont have to use animals.
I agree that animal testing is wrong, and I believe that we should work on a way to test without using animals. However up til then I do believe that if it can save lives it may be worth it for now.
Saying that I think that those who test cosmetics on animals should be punished for their cruelty
I doubt they do any on horses. The only thing that might be done is to test a medicine that is made for a horse. This wont harm the horse in any way, they just make sure that the dose is right 🙂

I hate animal testing because it is very cruel to animals, and i think people should treat animals the same way as we would treat any humans.

I agree. If it means saving a life then it should be done.
Medical advances and cosmetics are two very different things!

@emolina, if you’re still interested in learning more about Hume and the Scottish Enlightenment, this is the book I was talking about earlier: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Scottish-Enlightenment-Scots-Invention-Modern/dp/1841152765/

Ollie is right. Plus it would cost too much to look after the horse during the trial. Universities wouldn’t be able to afford it. Horses are safe 🙂
